Ever wanted to come home and have your computer already powered-up, loaded, and ready to go? You could do this by setting up a scheduled Power-ON through BIOS, but maybe you have an erratic schedule…Then what? You could come home at 3:00, or maybe as late as 12:00, and you do not want your computer running needless hours. The solution for you would be the technology known as Wake on LAN (WOL). WOL works like this, when your computer shuts down, some power is reserved for your NIC card (Network Interface Controller). At this point, the controller waits for the “magic packet”. What this is, is a special packet, with some special code, just for your specific card. Upon the arrival of this “magic packet”, the listening computer receives this packet, checks it for the correct information, and then boots if the Magic Packet is valid. You can google if your network card was WOL capabilities, and just about every IBM laptop should have it.

Ok, windows is boring. Its not exactly ugly, but its not “uber-cool”. Its kind of “n00b”. Mac OSX on the other hand, it dazzling. With a sleek interface, great color choices, and the sexy dock, many users go on to emulate their windows operating systems to look just like mac. Of course, if you like the interface enough, you could just go out and run Mac OS, but then your life would suck(compatibility issues with everything you want). When I first started applying themes to my desktop, I used windowsblinds, a product of Stardock. It was ok for a while, but many programs would have to be installed to get the Mac look I wanted. So, I found flyakiteosx. Crazy name, but it is awesome. Although many of you have heard about this already (its quite old), you may not have used it before. Basically, it changes everything on your desktop to look like mac (while still keeping it windows of course). It changes the boot screen, the logon screen, the explorer bar, taskbar, everything. It also adds cool things such as the dock, the finder(top bar), and great transitions (such as the shadow effect). All you have to do it run the setup file and everything is done for you, no hassle. Also, if you just cannot get used to the interface, or just do not like it, a simple uninstall will revert it back to how it was before. Try it out!

Today, Bill Gates revealed his latest creation – The Microsoft Surface. With its five special motion-detecting cameras, the Surface responds to the user’s touch, allowing someone to manipulate objects on screen with more freedom than ever before.

What makes this any different from a giant touchscreen? Well, not only can the Surface interact with humans, but it can work with other devices as well. Take a few pictures with a digital camera, and just place it onto the Surface. It’ll read the pictures from the camera, where it’ll load them on screen, allowing anyone to manipulate and edit the pictures with simple hand movements.

The Surface shows many promising applications. It can be used in restaurants, where diners can scroll through an electronic menu, dragging items they want into an ordering “pile” in the center of the screen. After the meal is finished, just throw your credit card onto the Surface and it’ll complete the transaction for you. They’ll be found in department stores, where the placement of an item onto the screen will cause data of the item to be displayed in an interactive menu. Look out for them in hotels and tourists attractions too, where they’ll be showing road directions, tourist hotspots, and more.

The Surface is planned to be available to various businesses by November of this year. If you’d like your hands on it, be ready to wait at least three years for a consumer version. At least this’ll give you plenty of time to save up the $5,000-$10,000 that you’ll have to pay.

The important stuff:

Apple launched its DRM-free music tracks from EMI’s digital catalog on its iTunes Plus site Wednesday, keeping its promise that it would offer the music files in the month of May.

The DRM-free songs, which feature high quality 256 kbps AAC encoding, are offered at $1.29 per song; iTunes will continue to offer its five million-plus songs in 128 kbps AAC encoding at 99 cents a song. Consumers can upgrade previously purchased EMI songs to iTunes Plus tracks for 30 cents a song and about $3 for an album.

Apple noted that iTunes Plus songs can be played on iPods, Mac and Windows computers, and widescreen TVs outfitted with Apple TV technology. The company said the songs can also be played on the Apple iPhone, which is scheduled to launch in late June.

This is great news for Itunes users like me who currently have to take “a long way around” to bypass DRM and play their files on other platforms. Sure its a bit more money, but I may end up buying a couple and see if its really worth it.

Thanks for reading!

Just a bit old, but I think this still stands…

Toshiba Matsushita Display announced an amazing new LCD display that is only 2.9mm thick. Halve iPod Nano’s thickness and that is about how paper-thin this Poly-Si LCD is. The LCD is 12.1-inch and is capable of 1280×800 resolution and brightness of 300 cd/m2. Measuring 270.5 x 180.0 x 4.50 mm and weighing 183 gram, the LCD is about 32% lighter than currently breed of LCD.

According to the two Japanese electronics giant (Toshiba and Matsushita), the LCD is already in production, but there are no words on when we can expect to see them in the market. I reckon we’ll see them first on laptops and monitors.

If you ever need to use a computer at a public location, chances are, many sites that you may want to go to will be blocked. But, don’t that stop you, simply do some of the following and browse on…

Simply open the command prompt and type:
Ping restricted.com ? restricted.com obviously being the restricted site
At this point you can take down the IP address (ex. 216.109.124.73) and enter it into the browser. If access to the command prompt is also restricted, see “How to bypass restrictions to get to the command prompt.” If this article has been taken from information leak, then know that it involves anything from opening the browser, selecting view > source, then saving it as X.bat and opening it to opening a folder or browser and typing in the location of cmd.exe depending on the OS. I will not go into further, as this a completely different topic.

Use https://restrictedsite.com as referring to it as a secured site may confuse the filter.

Note: These are ancient methods that many new filters defend against, but still may be applicable in your situation. If not, a little history never hurt anyone.

Web based Proxies:
Another one of the easier, yet effective methods include web based proxies. These are simple in the fact that you just enter the restricted address and surf! Some of these have some restrictions, like daily usage limits, etc but you can also use another proxy (perhaps one that sucks, like a text only) to bypass their restrictions as well. Here is a list of some:

• http://www.userbeam.de/cgi-bin/nph-userbeam.cgigi
• http://www.free2.surffreedom.com/nph-free.cgi

Proxy Software:
There are many proxy tools that allow you to surf anonymously that are more or less based on the same topics we’ve covered here. I’ve added them just to cover the topic thoroughly:

• http://www.inetprivacy.com/a4proxy/anonymous-grc.htm
• http://www.orangatango.com/home/index.ie.html
• http://www.steganos.com
• http://www.anonymization.net (toolbar that requires admin rights to install)

Proxy Servers:
This is a list of http proxies. These sites may not be up forever, so you may need to search for “free http proxy” or “public proxy servers” or other similar terms.

Proxy server lists:
• http://www.tehbox.com/proxy

Now that you have a list of proxies, you would open IE (internet explorer) and click on Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Advanced. Enter the address and port of one of the servers from the list in the proper area (http) and make sure the “use a proxy server for your LAN” option is selected. Remember to replace the proxy and port at your terminal to the original when you’re done.

Note: Some proxies listed may not work, and this method may decrease your surfing speed. By trying various entries, you’ll find one that works, or works faster.
Go to a web page translation site and use their services to “translate a page to English” thus accessing the blocked page through their trusted site.

You’ll notice that several translation sites are blocked, but by using less popular ones, this method can still be effective. Here is a list of some translation services. Again, these sites may not be up forever, so you may need to search for them.

Make Google Maps your maps

New! Create and share personalized, annotated maps of your world.

Mark your favorite places on the map

Draw lines and shapes to highlight paths and areas

Add your own text, photos and videos

Share your map with friends and family

Keep track of addresses you’ve previously entered.

Google Maps will automatically remember every address you enter

You can access or remove these addresses at any time by clicking on the Saved Locations link

The Street View feature places users at the road level, giving them the perspective of drivers and pedestrians and thus offering a deeper and more detailed experience of the location than aerial images provide.

Google plans to add more street views for more cities in the future. On another note lets look at Google’s competitor, Microsoft…

I am sure that many, if not most, psp users already know that the psp is not for just games. In fact, some do not use the psp for gaming at all. They might have originally bought the 280g portable platform with the intent of gaming on it, but some just use it to do what mp3 players like Apple’s Ipod cannot. For example, manga (Japanese comics), are becoming more and more popular outside of Japan, and especially in the United States. Using a program called PSPhoto, users can reformat image files to the correct resolution of their PSP, making it possible to read comics, or other literature on the device. Along with this, with the PSP’s larger display, watching videos is a lot better on it than watching it on any mp3 player which is sure to have a smaller one. If you do not already know, the psp already has an RSS feed reader, and an Internet Explorer. Using psp emulators and homebrew programs, users can download games in ISO format, and put them on their psp. Of course, this is illegal, but when has that stopped anyone that knows how to browse the web? Homebrew programs allow third party software to be installed on the PSP, and unlocks it to yield even greater potential and practicality in everyday life. For example, 3rd party software can be installed to allow one to use their psp as a universal remote for their household electronics.

Though many of you may know this, and it may be boring old news, I thought that it was be interesting for all of you out there which were not aware.
Thanks for reading, and look out for some newer news.

Yesterday, Google rolled out yet another reason to give its calendar a try–a version that squishes it down into a phone-friendly format. This is a complement to full-blown Google Calendar rather than a complete calendar app: Basically, you can see your schedule, move backwards and forwards one day at a time, and use a quick-scheduling feature to enter appointments in plain English (“staff meeting tomorrow at 3pm”). And that’s kind of the point–it’s not overloaded with clutter, and pops up quickly, so you can see what’s on your plate at a glance.

The bad…

There’d be significant downsides to this strategy–it takes a bit longer to get into Google Calendar than to pull up a calendar that’s stored in your phone, and you wouldn’t be able to check your schedule if you were someplace that Internet access doesn’t reach (like, say, on a phone).

Like I say, this initial phone version of Calendar is pretty Spartan–you can’t even change or delete existing appointments. For now, though, there’s only one feature I really want on my phone that it doesn’t seem to have: I don’t see any way to quickly jump to any date. Checking an appointment two months in the future would apparently involve dozens of clicks–you’d have to get there one day at a time.
