For people that watch Anime in Japanese with English subtitles, the different file types can sometimes be a problem. Without proper software installed, Windows Media Player cannot always play the file format in which these videos are encoded to. With this setback, users usually download VLC Player, “the one player to play them all”. The media player is known for being able to play pretty much all video and sound formats. However, VLC player is not perfect. Subtitles in video can sometimes overlap and build on top of one another. When this happens, subtitles become either very hard to read, or downright impossible. I myself experienced this when watching Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 1st GIG. To solve this problem, I just installed some codecs/software to allow me to play the .MKV (Matroska) files in Windows Media Player. So, here is what you will need to do the same:

  1. Download & Install the Combined Community Codec Pack(CCCP). You can do so here
    • Just so that you know, CCCP is “… a DirectShow filter pack specifically built for playing anime. It has been assembled by some of the most knowledgeable people in online anime distribution, and one of the primary design goals is to play as much as possible with as little as possible.” – Wikipedia
  2. Download & Install AC3Filter. Link here
    • This is necessary because many files you download may use AC3 sound. If you do not do this, then upon opening files which use AC3 in Windows Media Player, the sound will be very dim in some parts and extremely annoying.

Now you should be all set. No restart should be necessary, and you should be able to begin watching immediately. Just remember, if you are going to watch with Windows Media Player now…

  1. Right click on the video file you want to watch
  2. Select Open With.
  3. Select Windows Media Player
  4. DONT FORGET to check the box making this your selection everytimeHave fun….
